Pattern: Baby Surprise Jacket
The Opinionated Knitter by Elizabeth Zimmermann
Needles: Addi circ 5.0 mm 24”
Yarn: Kona Bay Wool from Pure Knits (1 sk green, 1 sk blue)
Gauge: 5 spi
Size: 6 months
Mods: Provisional cast on at cuffs, picked up these sts and added sleeve length in green, although there are 5 button holes I only sewed on 4 buttons
Started: 10.25.06
Finished: 11.06.06
This all garter stitch jacket is an intriguing knit and when things start to get “v. odd, indeed” (you’ll know what I mean when you knit one), just follow EZ’s words and “press on”. I messed up the middle a bit (the part where you do a large number of inc’s in one row- I did them over a handful of rows) but it still turned out okay. Only two short seams to sew and it’s reversible!

What a pretty color combination! I must have made a dozen of these little jackets, and it still surprises me every time that it really does all work out somehow in the end. EZ was a genius. I do like your idea of the provisional cast on. The original version of that little jacket is much too short in the arms, and also tight across the belly for a baby. (Babies are all belly!) Before, I had picked up stitches at the wrist and made a ribbed cuff but next time will try your idea of using the pco.
Next time you might like to try this method: Ignore EZ's buttonhole-making directions - after the sweater is finished, pick up sts along each front edge (in garter, one st for each bump) and then make a one-inch garter button band for each side - gives extra width across the front for that baby belly bump, and the buttonholes are simple yo's placed appropriately on left or right side (or both) in the appropriate spaces.
